About Tony
My Compassion for Others Inspired Me to Become a Therapist
During my time as a graduate student, my professors often reminded us that we don't choose to become therapists—the profession chooses us. Initially, I didn't fully grasp what they meant. However, as I reflected on my life, I realized that the obstacles I had encountered had drawn me to this path. Overcoming difficult circumstances instilled in me a deep compassion for others, ultimately guiding me to this career.
My childhood was fraught with challenges. I witnessed violence while living in unsafe environments, and my family often struggled to have enough food. Through years of dedication and perseverance, I managed to build a better life for myself. Along the way, I developed strong listening skills and became an adept problem-solver—traits that are now integral to my practice as a therapist.
My Education and Professional Background
I completed my bachelor’s degree in communications at California State University, Dominguez Hills, and after working in the field of public relations, I decided to join the military. I deployed several times with the United States Air Force, which broadened my perspective on life and deepened my appreciation for the freedoms we enjoy at home.
I knew that returning to work in PR wasn’t the right direction for me, so instead, I pursued my Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology at National University. I continued my education with a PhD in Clinical Psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute and began practicing as a therapist in 2007.
I come from a multicultural background and I have spent extensive time abroad, having lived in Colombia for nearly a year and traveled through much of Europe. Throughout my travels, I have learned to connect with people who saw the world differently from me. My experiences on the road and my knowledge of other cultures helps me connect with clients from diverse backgrounds.
My Counseling Philosophy
When I begin working with a client, they often feel like they’re trapped in the darkness and they cannot see the light. They struggle to believe that life can actually get better. I work collaboratively with individuals and couples to help them cultivate a sense of hope and clarity, which empowers them to begin making positive changes.
When developing treatment plans for my clients, I focus heavily on psychodynamic work. Through psychodynamic therapy, you can reflect on your past to understand the connections between your early life experiences and your actions in the present.
This approach is an especially powerful treatment approach for those suffering from trauma. Understanding how your past influences your present can bring about increased clarity and self-awareness. Your previous experiences may have affected your life’s direction, but you do not have to resign yourself to these circumstances. You have the power to change your life for the better—my goal is to help you tap into this power.
The Principles That Guide My Practice
Overall, I aim to live by the same principles that I encourage in my clients. I believe that a holistic approach to counseling is the most effective way to help clients heal. In addition to working with my clients on coping skills and self-reflection, I also emphasize the importance of proper rest, nutrition, exercise, strong connections with family and friends, and a relationship with a higher power if desired. With my clients, I have found that leading a more balanced lifestyle contributes to better psychological health.
Outside of my work as a therapist, I have been volunteering at homeless shelters for many years, as this population is very close to my heart. I also returned to CSU, Dominguez Hills as a professor to teach courses on marriage and family therapy. I enjoy hiking and boating whenever I get the opportunity and I’m also working towards my pilot’s license.
How I Work
In therapy, my goal is to help you realize that you can change your life. You do not have to remain trapped in your current circumstances, and chances are, you’ll come to see that you’re capable of far more than you once realized. If you’re interested in starting therapy, I invite you to explore my website or schedule a free consultation to learn more about my practice. Whether you are struggling with depression, anxiety, or trauma, we can work together in therapy to help you find long-term solutions and create a brighter future.
